Know which jobs or career options you are interested in pursuing.
Search the classified section of all local newspapers as often as you can. Most public libraries subscribe to a few newspapers, and you can use them in the library free of charge. Search through the jobs advertised in the Classifieds, and apply for all that seem relevant and possible for an individual with your qualifications, skills and experience.
When you apply for a job, ensure that you are within the deadline given. Also be sure to give all the required information e.g. CV, copies of academic certificates, letters of reference etc.
Do not apply for a job for which you are not qualified. You are just adding to the administrative burden of the person who has to process these applications. The chances of you actually being considered for the job are remote.
Register yourself and your CV on as many job or career websites as possible. Some of these are:
Note: This is not an exhaustive list. We also are not recommending these websites by mentioning them here, nor do we mean to imply that sites not listed here are not recommended. This is simply a sample list of websites on which you can register yourself and your CV.
Depending on your chosen field, you may consider registering with one or more recruitment agencies. These agencies are more important and relevant for individuals with a professional qualification.
Learn to network effectively. Speak to people you know who may be able to help you find employment. Use all your contacts, even the most unlikely ones. Also strike up conversations with strangers at events you attend. Be constantly on the alert for opportunities to market yourself to everyone. You may be surprised at how and when your opportunity knocks.
If you are a first time job seeker, expect to find that most potential employers are looking for employees with some work experience at least. Try to plan for this by taking relevant holiday jobs while studying. If this does not apply to you e.g. if you are job hunting straight after leaving school, consider offering your services free of charge to a potential employer, for a few months only. This will allow you to obtain some valuable work experience, and to prove yourself to your employer at the same time.
Do not allow yourself to become disappointed if you do not find a job quickly and easily. Understand at the outset that job hunting can be and is often a long and wearying process, but one which will be richly rewarding if approached properly. There are hundreds of applicants for every vacancy, so the chances that you will find a job immediately are slim. Be grateful for every chance to apply and interview for a job, recognise it all as useful experience leading you towards employment. Above all, do not become despondent or angry about unsuccessful applications for employment.
